University of Maryland Professor of Economics and co-author of the study, Maureen Cropper, discusses a National Research Council report that examines hidden health and environmental costs of energy production and consumption in U.S. Congress requested the study in the Energy Policy Act of 2005. The goal was to quantify the external costs and benefits associated with electricity production, distribution and use in the U.S among three sectors: electricity generation, transportation, and heating of buildings.
