UN to Study Marine Ecosystems Role in Climate
A new UN study aims to tie down just how big a role oceans play in absorbing carbon.
The UN Environment Programme and Indonesia have announced a joint study of the role marine and coastal ecosystems play in avoiding climate change.
Indonesia is hosting UNEP's annual meeting, and has extensive coastal regions. By official count, it is composed of 17,000 islands.
UNEP chief Achim Steiner said marine systems may be "natural allies against climate change" and scientists need to understand their potential for reducing greenhouse emissions.
