Refiners Cut Production Following Texas Oil Spill

Oil tanker spill in Port Arthur, Texas.

Refiners in Texas are cutting back production because of that huge oil tanker spill in Port Arthur.

A Coast Guard Captain says four plants along the Texas ship channel have cut production. The waterway is still closed after more than 460,000 gallons of oil were spilled Saturday when a barge collided with a tanker.

The Coast Guard says 13 tankers are waiting to enter the port and 11 are waiting to leave.

The four plants, owned by Exxon Mobil, Royal Dutch Shell, Valero and Total, have the combined processing capacity of 1.15 million barrels of oil a day, about 6.5 percent of the U.S. total.

The Coast Guard noted there is ample capacity available at other Gulf Coast locations to mitigate any production impact.
