NOAA Gets $5.6B Increase for More Climate Satellites

President Obama is asking for more satellites to study climate change, and better resources to address the impacts.

The president's 2011 budget seeks $5.6 billion for the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, a 17% increase over the current year's administration budget.

The breakdown: $2.2-billion to satellite services, with half of that for the new Joint Polar Satellite System, and  $730-million for next generation geo-stationary satellites. Also, Obama wants $9.5 million for the Deep Space Climate Observatory.

And the White House is also seeking almost $465-million for NOAA's climate research office, including almost $21-million for the Carbon Tracker Observing and Analysis System, and $10-million for regional and national climate assessments.
