Denver, CO Company Proposes Solar Panel Fee
Power customers in Colorado are fuming over a new proposed fee, which they say would punish new customers for getting solar panels.
Xcel Energy is proposing a 2.6 cents per kilowatt hour fee, in addition to a current meter reading fee of $7 to $8.
Xcel says its proposed fee would pay for distribution and transmission of energy.
The new charges would go into effect in April 2010, and the fee would be paid regardless of whether electricity was actually used, though customers who got solar panels before April 2010 would be exempt.
Members of the solar panel industry are against the new fee, saying that installing solar panels actually saves Xcel money on construction and transmission lines.
The Public Utilities Commission will make the final decision about the fee - a public hearing is scheduled for August 5th.
