Colo. Panel Approves RES Bill
A bill that would increase Colorado's renewable energy standard has passed its first test.
The measure approved Friday by the state's House Transportation and Energy Committee would require large utility companies to generate nearly one-third of their electricity from renewable energy sources by 2020.
The measure would apply only to large electricity providers. Small municipal utilities and rural electric cooperatives would be exempt.
The bill is one of the top priorities this year for Gov. Bill Ritter. It now goes to the House Appropriations Committee.
Democrats say the proposed rules would give Colorado the highest renewable energy standard in the West and one of the highest nationally, while Republicans say it will needlessly drive up the cost of electricity.
