Canada Announces Goals Under Copenhagen Accord

Two days after the United States announced its emissions goals under the Copenhagen Accord, its neighbor to the north says, "me, too."

Canada submitted its target to the United Nations on Saturday, and it's the same as the U.S. goal --17 percent below 2005 levels by 2020.

Environment Minister Jim Prentice says Canada wants a binding international treaty that builds on the Copenhagen framework -- One that applies to all carbon emitters, including China and the U.S. He says his government will work specifically with oil sands and other emissions sources.

Prentice says his country and the U.S. will work together to roll out piecemeal reductions in all sectors, starting with new emissions standards for automobiles next year.

Environmentalists say the target actually means an increase in Canada's CO2 emissions from 1990 levels ... Not the 3 percent reduction announced in 2006.

And New Zealand also signed on to the accord today, pledging to cut carbon 10 to 20 percent below 1990 levels by 2020.
