Ariz. Governor Endorses New Nuclear Plants

Governor Jan Brewer

Arizona may be the land of the sun, but its governor is giving a green light to nuclear energy.

Governor Jan Brewer told a regional business summit Tuesday that Arizona needs more nuclear plants to attract new industry to the state.

The state is already home to the three-reactor Palo Verde station west of Phoenix.  But the governor says today's economy and environmental concerns are good reasons to build the first new U.S. nuclear plants since the 1980s.

But Brewer says she's still committed to making Arizona "the solar capital of the world."  She says the state's new income and property tax incentives lured China's Suntech Power Holdings to choose Arizona for a major manufacturing plant.

The director of the Sierra Club's Grand Canyon Chapter praised Brewer's comments on solar energy, but says her endorsement of nuclear power undermines support for "truly clean renewable energy."
